The Montessori topponcino is one of the first things we can use to help a baby have a smoother transition in his new life outside of the womb. It is often called a “security pillow” or “Montessori baby pillow”. The topponcino is meant to create a point of reference and security. In this article I’ll introduce what it is, it’s purpose, how to use it, where you can acquire one and even link you to references on how to make it yourself if you’re more crafty.
“The baby finds security and a familiar scent – their scent and the scent of their parents, siblings, and family – in this thin cushion. It prevents overstimulation when handled by family and friends, and it allows the baby to be transferred from arms to bed without triggering their startle reflex.”

What is a Topponcino?
The topponcino was originally created by Dr. Maria Montessori. It is thought to have been inspired by the cloths in which babies were placed when mothers attended her trainings in India. A topponcino is a small pillow that helps a newborn baby with his transition from the womb into the world by being its first prepared environment. When a newborn arrives, he experiences many new smells, sounds, sights, and a multitude of new sensations. The topponcino will help ease him into life outside of the womb. It can be used from birth, through the first few months (the symbiotic period).
The topponcino is made of natural materials and can be used to carry him or lay him down upon. It helps baby have a point of reference in which he feels safe and familiar. It is particularly handy to help baby feel supported when he is being passed around family members, or in the arms of siblings.
The topponcino also helps to transition baby from the arms to the bed or floor, as the transition is less noticeable and therefore smoother.
How to Prepare & Use the Topponcino
The best way to prepare the topponcino before you begin using it with your newborn is to wash it (preferably with the detergent you’ll use for baby’s items, so he’ll get familiar with the scent). Then it is recommended you sleep with it in your bed. You can place it in your pillowcase, between you and your partner, snuggle it, etc. This way, the topponcino already begins to absorb the smells that are unique to your home and family. Make sure that you take it with you wherever you plan to give birth, this way you can use it from the very start!
Where to Buy a Montessori Topponcino
Although they may not be commonly found in your local baby-supply store, there are small companies and creators who sell them, including many creators on Etsy.
If you live in Belgium, I highly recommend Les Petites Mains Montessori. It is owned by a mother and two daughters, all Montessori trained by AMI, and who have worked in a Montessori environment: they hand-make a number of Montessori materials that really respect Maria Montessori’s vision and philosophy, with the child in mind. You can find them on Instagram and Facebook. This is where I got mine.
If you live in the United States, there’s a really nice brand called the Topponcino Company, also family owned, who make topponcinos and several handy accessories to go with it.
Making Your Own Topponcino
If you’re a little crafty, I’ve heard that making a topponcino isn’t too difficult (though I haven’t tried this myself). There are a few places that share the measurements and/or templates on how to make them. So if you have beautiful fabric lying around, or have a cloth/fabric that means a lot to your family or culture, you can easily make a custom piece.
I’ve found a couple of websites that have templates that break down how to make your own:
Are you familiar with the topponcino? Have you used one in the past? Is it something you’d consider using or gift to a friend/family member for their baby? Share your experience!
